Qatar’s Best Kept Secrets – Nature Edition

The glistening skyline of Doha is a sight to see, but do you know that there are a number of beautifully natural areas in Qatar? Take a look and go on a journey like never before!

  1. Zekreet:

Located on the west coast of Qatar (by Dukhan), Zekreet Beach is filled with bays and coves, and is well liked by campers and water sports lovers. The half-moon bay with rocky outcrops on both ends of the beach is truly a site to see.  There are a number of things to see in Zekreet, including a palace, a fort and an oasis.
  2. Qatar Mangroves:

Qatar is home to mangrove tree communities (both grey and white), and are formed in the form of several forests around the shores of Qatar. These natural treasures are home to a wealth of sea life, and are beautiful to see. The largest area of mangroves and the oldest can be found around Al Thakira and Al Khor.
  3. Purple Island:

Located near Al Khor, Purple Island is 50kms north of Doha and is home to lush green mangroves and a very popular beach. While the mangroves are the top attraction, you can also find a number of birds, fish and sea life. (The island gets its name from an ancient purple dye producing site that was situated there more than 3,000 years ago!)
  4. Qatar’s Inland Sea – Khor Al Adaid

Located on the southeast corner of Qatar, Qatar’s Inland Sea is a UNESCO recognized natural reserve that even has its own eco-system, making it one of the few places in the world where the sea encroaches deep into the heart of the desert.
  5. Ras Abrouq Rock Formations

Located in the northern part of Dukhan, Ras Abrouq Rock Formations are a lunar-like landscape of limestone rock formations sculpted by the wind. The isolated Ras Abrouq is famous for its natural sandy beaches and wild deer reserve.
  6. Dahl Al Misfir Cave

One of Qatar’s most well-kept secrets, the Dahl Al Misfir Cave is located in the municipality of Al Rayyan. It is essentially a 40 meter deep cave that gives phosphorescent glow and is filled with gypsum (a sulphate mineral) crystal.
